Tanzania Association of the Deaf popularly known by its Kiswahili acronym “CHAVITA” (CHAMA CHA VIZIWI TANZANIA) is a non – Governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to the advancement of Deaf people in the United Republic of Tanzania. It was formed in 1983 and officially registered on September 4th, 1984 with registration No: SO. 6466 under Societies ordinance rules of 1954 of the United Republic of Tanzania and thereafter changes made under CAP.337 and attained Registration number NGO 1878.
CHAVITA was established to address the problems experienced by Deaf people in Tanzania and to improve their life standards. These problems result in isolation and stigmatisation of Deaf people within their communities, and as a result, they tend to be among the poorest. Deaf people are more likely to have incomes below the poverty line and have no assets to cushion themselves against shocks, they are more vulnerable socially and economically. They are more likely to have lower education and poorer health, and to be poorly nourished, they are often outside of social services and social security, segregated, discriminated against and denied the right to use their own language.
We CHAVITA as pressure group ensures the right of deaf people are attained through lobbying and advocacy as formulated in our mission and vision
